Fall in Tahoe

The first hint of fall on Tahoe’s East Shore usually comes with a cool breeze off the lake. If you’ve been here in autumn, you know what I’m talking about. The water is calmer, the beaches quieter, and you can almost hear the sound of the leaves turning gold. Driving along Highway 28, the aspens start to pop like little lanterns in the forest, each bend in the road offering another moment that makes you want to pull over just to soak it in. For anyone, including our Members, searching for the best places to see fall foliage in Lake Tahoe, this stretch of road is pure magic.

However, one of the most rewarding ways to take it all in is on the trail. Marlette Lake, tucked above Sand Harbor, is one of the best East Shore leaf-peeping hikes. The climb is worth it, not just for the sweeping views of Tahoe stretching wide behind you, but for the groves of aspens in every shade of yellow and orange. By the time you reach the water, you feel like you’ve stepped into an epic autumn world.

Then for those of you who want to head south, Taylor Creek is where it’s at. The salmon run brings a flash of red to the water, while the cottonwoods along the creek match the fiery colors. For families, Rainbow Trail is ideal because it’s a gentle loop (not too long, not too short). Plus, if you linger a while, you might catch sight of a bald eagle circling overhead.

The reality is…summer may get the spotlight, but fall is when Tahoe shows its softer side. We trade in the buzz of boats and beach days for something quieter, more intimate. It’s the season that invites you to breathe a little deeper, walk a little slower, and savor the beauty of autumn in Lake Tahoe before the snow arrives.

Our greatest suggestion…enjoy!
